Should you see water spilling over the edge of your gutters, your house is bearing a lot of weight along the edge of the roof. Once the rain quits, get out the ladder and make sure that your gutters are draining effectively at the corner where the gutter meets the downspout.
From inside your home, it is a good idea to get up into the attic and listen for drips. Even a small roof leak can lead to big expenses over time. Additionally, if your region is prone to hail, you may have a small roof leak caused by hail damage that you didn’t notice right after the storm. To get the best results from your insurance coverage, you will want to get things inspected and repaired quickly.
Caulking
Checking out the caulking around windows and doors is an excellent project for a sunny day. If you notice cracks along the edge of caulking, remove the product with putty knife to get down to the surface of the window and trim. If the gaps underneath the old caulk are large, fill them with spray foam or with foam backer rod and caulk over that.
Once you have cleared away old caulking,
- clean the area to be recaulked with rubbing alcohol
- remove any old caulking residue
- use the right product for exterior protection
- try to apply during low humidity and wind
Caulking during high winds can lead to dust getting trapped in the product. It needs to be at least 45 degrees Fahrenheit for most caulk to cure.
Pests
It may bug you to find ants in your house, but carpenter ants are much more destructive and harder to see. Mouse droppings are terribly unsanitary, but it is the chewing they do that can really cause the most destruction over time. You need to find out how they are getting in, close down that access, and kill or remove the mice.
If you notice dust or dirt along baseboards, mouse droppings or termite tubes around the outside of your home along the foundation, it is a very good idea to set up a maintenance check with a pest company. If your region has termites, getting traps installed and checked regularly can save a great deal of money over time.
